Dear Colleague,

Update and plea for help

We are just over 2 weeks into the new year and Hannah our Youth Worker is now on maternity leave. Her husband Joe, who many of you will know, is our former Sports Development Worker and he has taken on the role of supporting clubs to cover Hannah’s maternity leave.  As the ‘due date’ approaches I hope you will join me in wishing Hannah and Joe well for the future.

During his first 2 weeks Joe has been busy dealing with requests for help and re-affiliation, and he is able to call upon the support of Lindsey, Debbie, myself and the experienced team at DYA. He will always try his best to help, if you have a question or need help please ask.

A BIG THANK YOU to those of you who provided time and information for our Stage 1 Bid to the Community Fund (Formerly BLF) which we submitted prior to the Christmas holidays. We received positive feedback and to make the bid stronger and increase our chances of success we need to talk to more young people in youth clubs and groups. This is something we have wanted to do for a while and will help DYA to take stock and move forward ensuring that we are meeting current needs.

After over 40 years’ experience of youth work in both the public and voluntary sectors, this is the most difficult financial time I have ever known and I would suggest that young people need good Youth Workers now more than ever.

ACTION – I have asked George one of our Family Link Workers to visit as many clubs as possible to talk to young people and seek their views on youth services and what they need.  This will then be included in the next stage of the funding bid which we hope will bring additional resources to Dorset, which are so badly needed after continued cuts.  We had some really useful feedback from leaders and Trustees which we used in the initial Stage 1 bid and would like to add to this, so please pass on your views to George when she visits.

We need your help – George will take on the new temporary role from the 29th April – 12th July, to give her the best possible start and to enable her to meet as many youth groups as possible, it would be really helpful if you could host a visit and offer dates for her to visit your group.

Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] for more information and to set an early date in your diary.

When George has completed her work it would be my intention to use the information to strengthen the bid and submit by the end of August.

Please keep up your good work with young people in these very difficult and changing times.
