Our help was required for a family with a son who had been permanently excluded from school, had a history of substance misuse and mental health issues.

It was decided that a Family Link Worker would mentor the young person. Regularly meeting with the young person and colleagues from Shadows, Young Persons Targeted Misuse Outreach Service, we found ways to motivate him. He began volunteering at a local sports team, and alongside our sessions and activities he gained the confidence to independently and successfully find a job.

Both the young person and his mother have emphasised how pivotal the support has been in achieving positive changes, with the mother noticing an improved relationship with her son. He is due to start at a new school in September with a much better chance of success, and support will continue until he has settled there.
