This project was established in 2007 aiming to give the steering group and the young people of Purbeck a voice and opportunities to become involved in the decision-making process that affects their lives. ‘Young Purbeck’ was youth-led, but was supported by a professional youth worker, it meant the young people planned and ran their own projects. They also linked up with different youth groups and represented the area on county based forums and projects.

I joined because I wanted to get involved in my local area; there were so many tings that needed changing that some adults just couldn’t notice”.

Young Purbeck also worked hard to provide links and support to other Purbeck based youth organisations, School and Councils and had an interest on a National and International scale. Young Purbeck contributed to the Dorset Children & Young People’s Plan, Sure Start Consultation and Dorset County Council Safeguarding of Children training for young people.

We went to a fantastic consultation which let us have our say and really make a difference; it was for young people to give their views on Purbeck”.

This project was an excellent example of statutory and voluntary organisations working together to meet joint goals. Almost half of the funding was funding was provided by Purbeck District Council and DYA raised the remainder - working together to make things happen.

Young Purbeck also created its own website for young people to blog their views and raise issues about Purbeck, and find out about activities taking place in the area.
